ROLE PURPOSE
The Marketing and Communications Intern will support Just A Start’s day-to-day external communications and marketing initiatives. This role focuses on tactical execution including content creation, graphic design, collateral development, social media posting, and storytelling support.
Working under the guidance of the Associate Director of Communications, the Intern will help ensure consistent, mission-aligned messaging across all our platforms while maintaining organized communications systems that strengthen Just A Start’s visibility and impact.
This is an ideal role for a college student or emerging marketing professional seeking hands-on nonprofit marketing experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Media & Content Creation
- Draft and schedule social media posts aligned with the organization’s editorial calendar;
- Support posting and formatting content across digital platforms;
- Monitor engagement and flag comments or messages requiring follow-up;
- Short form content editing.
Graphic Design and Collateral Development
- Assist in designing social media graphics, flyers, recruitment materials, and event collateral;
- Support formatting and design of newsletters, invitations, and digital campaigns;
- Ensure materials align with Just A Start’s brand standards.
Storytelling and Content Tracking
- Assist in conducting interviews with program participants, residents, and partners;
- Help maintain and organize the organization’s story bank including quotes, testimonials, and impact highlights;
- Track photo releases and maintain organized digital assets;
- Help identify opportunities to elevate participant and resident voices.
Administrative and Project Support
- Maintain shared communications calendars and project trackers;
- Assist with proofreading and copy editing across materials;
- Coordinate with program staff to gather information for marketing requests.
QUALIFICATIONS & KEYS TO SUCCESS
- Strong graphic design skills and visual storytelling ability;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Experience with Canva required; familiarity with Adobe Suite preferred;
- Experience with social media platforms and content scheduling tools;
- Strong short form content editing skills;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to manage multiple small projects and meet deadlines;
- Comfortable communicating with staff, participants, and community partners;
- Willingness to ask questions and take initiative;
Preferred:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed coursework in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, Journalism, or related field;
- Interest in nonprofit communications and community impact work.

HOURS AND EMPLOYMENT TERM
This is a hybrid, part-time role with an expected schedule of 10 hours per week with some days in the office. The compensation for the role is $15.00/hour. This role is scheduled to conclude on August 21, 2026.
