Fortune is hiring an AI reporter to expand our coverage of one of the most consequential forces reshaping business and the global economy.
We’re looking for a journalist who is fascinated by artificial intelligence, the tech companies building it, and how it is transforming industries, redefining corporate strategy, and changing the nature of work.
The AI reporter will work closely with AI Editor Jeremy Kahn, joining our growing team covering the business of technology. The ideal candidate brings strong reporting instincts, with an ability to develop sources and land scoops from inside the leading AI companies, as well as a passion for smart, explanatory and investigative storytelling. You should possess an ability to translate complex technical, policy, and philosophical issues into sharp, accessible journalism for a global business audience.
We’re seeking someone who appreciates the craft of magazine writing — producing beautifully-written, deeply reported features in close collaboration with our award-winning art and editing teams — while also thriving in the fast-paced world of digital journalism, breaking news, and newsletters. If you have experience and are comfortable moderating conference panels on stage and are comfortable appearing on television, in short-form social videos, and on podcasts, that is also a plus.
You will:
- Report and write original stories across digital and print, from quick-turn analysis and scoops to in-depth features
- Develop a specialized beat within the AI ecosystem — such as the intricacies of the AI infrastructure boom, the policy and politics of AI, or the ethical quandaries posed as AI is adopted at scale within Fortune 500 companies — and become a go-to reporter on that subject
- Cultivate high-level sources across leading AI labs, startups, venture capital firms, academia, big tech, and policy circles
- Bring curiosity, skepticism, and clarity to one of the most hyped yet important technologies of our time
- Participate in Fortune events and conferences, contributing ideas and expertise to panels, newsletters, and cross-platform coverage
- Uphold Fortune’s high editorial standards of rigor, accuracy, and fairness
The right candidate:
- Has experience covering AI, technology or business as a beat reporter, with an interest in AI’s economic, business, and societal impact
- Is eager to break news and pursue exclusive angles with persistence and creativity
- Writes clearly and analytically, finding connections between technology, leadership, and business outcomes
- Has a demonstrated ability to develop sources and build trusted relationships
- Understands the digital landscape — from SEO and social media to audience engagement — and uses those tools to amplify important stories
- Thrives in collaboration, responding positively to editing and feedback
Location
Preference for candidates based in San Francisco or the Bay Area, or New York.
Salary range
$100,000 to $140,000. This range is a good faith estimate and may ultimately vary based on a number of relevant factors.
