Job Overview
The Social Media Specialist is responsible for planning, creating, coordinating, and managing social media content that strengthens Haisla Nation’s online presence, supports member engagement, and promotes organizational initiatives, programs, events, and community stories.
Reporting to the Manager, Communications and Events, this role supports the delivery of clear, consistent, respectful, and culturally appropriate communications across Haisla Nation’s social media platforms. The Social Media Specialist develops engaging written, visual, and video content; monitors online engagement; supports digital campaigns; tracks performance metrics; and ensures social media activity aligns with Haisla Nation’s communications strategy, brand standards, values, and strategic priorities.

We are about 1962+ people, with approximately 532 living in Haisla (Kitamaat Village). Duties & Responsibilities
Social Media Content Creation:
- Develop, design, write, edit, and publish engaging content for Haisla Nation’s social media platforms, including posts, graphics, photos, videos, reels, stories, captions, and campaign materials.
- Create content that reflects Haisla Nation’s values, culture, programs, events, services, and community priorities.
- Ensure all content is accurate, professional, culturally respectful, and aligned with approved messaging and brand guidelines.
- Support photography, videography, and basic editing for events, announcements, campaigns, and community initiatives.
- Maintain a consistent tone, style, and visual identity across all social media platforms.
Platform Management:
- Manage day-to-day activity across Haisla Nation’s social media platforms.
- Schedule, publish, and monitor posts to ensure timely and consistent communication.
- Maintain and update the social media content calendar in coordination with the Manager, Communications and Events.
- Monitor platform activity, comments, messages, and engagement trends.
- Ensure urgent, sensitive, or high-risk inquiries are escalated appropriately.
Communications and Campaign Support:
- Support the planning and implementation of digital communication campaigns for programs, events, announcements, community updates, recruitment, emergency notices, and public information.
- Work with departments to gather information and develop appropriate social media content.
- Translate complex or department-specific information into clear, accessible, and engaging content for members and the broader public.
- Support communication efforts related to community events, Council updates, organizational initiatives, and member services.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with Haisla members and the public in a respectful, professional, and timely manner.
- Respond to general inquiries or direct messages within approved communication guidelines.
- Support positive online engagement and help maintain a respectful digital community.
- Identify recurring questions, concerns, or misinformation and bring them forward to the Manager, Communications and Events.
Analytics and Reporting:
- Track and analyze social media performance, including reach, engagement, audience growth, content performance, and campaign results.
- Prepare regular reports and recommendations to improve content effectiveness and audience engagement.
- Use analytics to identify trends, improve posting schedules, and strengthen digital communication strategies.
Brand, Risk, and Content Quality:
- Ensure all content follows Haisla Nation’s communications standards, confidentiality expectations, and approval processes.
- Maintain professionalism when handling sensitive, political, cultural, or community-related content.
- Support reputation management by monitoring public-facing communication risks and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Ensure photos, videos, and member-related content are used with proper consent and respect for privacy.
Collaboration and Internal Support:
- Work closely with internal departments to identify social media needs, upcoming events, program updates, and communication opportunities.
- Support the Manager, Communications and Events with broader communication tasks as required.
- Assist with event promotion, live coverage, post-event highlights, and digital storytelling.
- Maintain organized files of social media assets, templates, photos, videos, and campaign materials.
Trends and Best Practices:
- Stay current with social media trends, platform updates, tools, algorithms, and best practices.
- Recommend new approaches to improve engagement, reach, accessibility, and content quality.
- Support continuous improvement of Haisla Nation’s digital presence.
Skills & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Digital Media, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum two years of experience in social media management, content creation, communications, marketing, or a related role.
- Strong knowledge of major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
- Experience developing social media content, graphics, short-form video, captions, campaigns, and engagement strategies.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
- Experience using social media scheduling and management tools such as Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social, or similar platforms.
- Experience using analytics tools such as Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, platform insights, or related tools.
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software, photography, or graphic design is considered an asset.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with an attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to professionally connect with and influence a diverse group of individuals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
Salary Range: $26.39/hr - $31.05/hr
