Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.
We are currently seeking a full-time Public Relations Specialist is responsible for supporting the implementation of media relations campaigns and garnering ongoing positive earned media coverage for Space Center Houston. The specialist will engage with local, regional, national and international media on both a reactive and proactive basis. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the development and execution of media relations strategies and media outreach plans to communicate Space Center Houston’s key messages and achieve ongoing positive coverage in broadcast and traditional media.
- Manage news media requests and other requests for interviews, stories, tours, broadcasting, photo shoots and filming in and around Space Center Houston.
- Meet and accompany the press for on-site requests.
- Establish relationships and work collaboratively with Space Center Houston departments (Guest Operations, Security, Facilities) to ensure on-site press coverage is successful and does not disrupt Center operations or the guest experience.
- Research and develop story ideas, pitches, key messages, reports, and other communications as necessary.
- Develop and distribute media materials, including news releases, talking points, Q&As, and briefs.
- Monitor news media coverage and create and distribute reports to internal stakeholders.
- Analyze results of news media coverage and create reports demonstrating alignment with department KPIs.
- Stay up to date on changes in the media landscape and industry trends.
- Continuously update the Space Center Houston News Center.
- Assist in crisis communications in conjunction with the Manager of Communications.
- Plan and manage special media and public relations events.
- Serve key internal department client(s) with their communications needs (public relations, marketing, and other messaging) and assist with the development of strategic plans. Ensure the plan is executed in a timely manner.
- Use strong communication skills to influence, guide and motivate stakeholders internally and externally with tact, reasoning and sensitivity.
- Collaborate with Communications and Marketing team members on various projects.
- Work with NASA Johnson Space Center Public Affairs Office, and space and tourism partners to develop a cohesive and mutually beneficial working relationship that will amplify campaigns.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of media-relations tools, including a media monitoring platform such as MuckRack.
- Perform other PR duties and special projects as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or Journalism.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the field of Public Relations, Media Relations or Journalism.
- Demonstrated experience generating proactive earned media.
- Excellent spokesperson to the news media and excellent public speaking skills.
- Excellent writing skills and experience in writing media materials.
- Available to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, and be on call at times. Some travel may be required.
- High level of professionalism, energy, enthusiasm and collaboration.
- Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Canva.
- Proficiency in media monitoring, reporting, and data analysis, using platforms such as MuckRack, Cision, or Meltwater.
- Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily works in an office environment with frequent use of a computer, phone, and standard office equipment.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while working at a desk or facilitating meetings and onboarding sessions.
- Frequently communicates with media in person, by phone, and via electronic communication; must be able to exchange accurate information in these settings.
- May occasionally need to move about the facility to attend meetings.
- Work environment may include a mix of office settings and active operational areas, requiring adaptability and awareness of surroundings.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining attention to detail and professionalism.
- May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or special events based on business needs.
